    Rainbow

Got stuck in traffic on my way home from the farm today and saw this big rainbow.  I guess if you're stuck in traffic, seeing a rainbow makes it a little more enjoyable.   This is why we have rainbows on our car license plates.

    Another Recession Special

Day 10 of penny pinching. One of the super markets here marks down bentos and other prepared food around 3pm.  I got this Tempura and Shrimp Roll for 99 cents each.  Washed it down with a Kirin beer.  Not bad for a $2 dinner.

Making 獅子頭 (and 2 other dishes)

I've wanted to take a stab at this for a long time.  Finally did it.

Step 1: Make the filling.  Pork, green onion, soy sauce , rice wine, ginger, and a few other things
    IMG_2693IMG_2694IMG_2696

Step 2: Make into balls. Put cornstarch on top to prevent sticking.
    IMG_2697IMG_2698IMG_2699

Step 3: Cook in the wok for a few mins until brown all over.  Don't cook the whole way thru.

Step 4: Place in sha guo.  Put a bunch of bai cai on the bottom.  Then put some boiling broth on top and simmer for 1.5 hours.

    My New Car

I finally found my new car.  It is a 2002 Toyota Corolla.  It was a little more than I wanted to spend... but the engine is in top shape and the car only has 45K miles.  I figured I would spend a little more now and hope to avoid a mechanical mess later on.

    Costco Lunch (the recession special)

Since the economy keeps getting worse, I have had to cut back on spending.  One area I totally cut out was eating at restaurants.  There are a few exceptions: McDonalds ($1 double burgers) & Costco (hotdogs).  Today I went to Costco on my way home from the gym.  $1.50 still buys  a hotdog and soda with free refills.  I use to eat this all the time when I was in business school 4 years ago.  Amazing that the price is still the same!

    Penang Laksa

Jie Hong took me to a place in Singapore that has one of my favorite foods in the world: Penang Laksa.  This little stall is located near the Chinese Garden subway stop.  3 SGD/bowl.  Thanks Jie Hong

    Shadow...Goodbye my friend

Many of you know that I lost my job here in Singapore and haven't been able to find a new one because of the financial mess.  As I get ready to return home, I have been selling the things I got while living here.  Today it was the motorcycle's turn.  Really sad to see this go... the first new motorcycle (or car) I ever owned.  I'm usually a used bike person but because I couldn't find a good used bike here...opted for a new one.  Big mistake.  I sold the bike today for 9K... about 45% less than what I paid for it 7 months ago.  It had 2,000 KM on the odometer.  I had been trying to sell it for weeks and had no more time.  Amazingly, even at a 45% loss... I can still buy the exact same bike new in the US when I get home.  Singapore is very expensive.  I really liked this bike...my second Shadow.

    Red Sox Win

Another Red Sox playoff series won while i'm in Asia.   We beat the Angels 3-2 today and will now face Tampa Bay for the right to go to the World Series again.  I sold my tv and since I don't have a job anymore... I watched the game on my laptop in my empty apartment.   Kinda sad... but I didn't mind.  Go Sox.

Had my beer all ready for the win..

Apple Dumpling & The Redding Terminal (Phili, Pa)

I've been going to this stand in the Redding Terminal in Phili for years to get Apple Dumplings.  These things have got to be one of the best deserts on earth.  The apple dumpling comes with your choice of heavy or whipped cream (i think heavy is better and costs only $3.  What a deal.  That barley gets you a starbucks brownie.
