March 23 Waipio Valley
Took a drive over to Waipio Valley. Very cool place. It is about 900 feet to the bottom of the valley down a very steep road. Cars are not allowed down so I walked. This is the view at the bottom The road got rather muddy and at times... turned into a river. Taro fields The beach in the valley. Some nice waves today but a little windy to surf. March 22 Hike up Puu WaaWaaI arrived on the Big Island yesterday and did my first hike today up Puu WaaWaa which is an old volcano on the Kona Coast. Here is the GPS data:
This is Puu Waawaa from down near where I parked my car. The whole area around the mtn is a rance with sheep and cows roaming around. The mtn doesn't look like much but top is 4012 feet or about 1222M. Base elv. is about 2,000 feet or 611m so the hike climbs about 2K over 3.5 miles.
The road up to the base is nothing special.
As I said this whole area is one big ranch. That is Mt. Kea in the distance. Notice the snow on top. Snow in Hawaii!
That grassy bowl is the middle part of the volcano (or what is left of it).

March 17 Sunday WorkoutI moved my weekend workout to Sunday taking Saturday off. I think this helped end my ever weakening pushup and bench press numbers.
The hike up Koko Head was pretty fast. 17:47 up and 5:55 down. I would have been a tad faster but got stuck behind a few people both ways.
Did a 1.5mile run today in 10:39 as well... man.. 4 seconds off of 5 points! March 09 Congrats Singapore!March 08 Garmin GPSI'm usually slow to get new gadgets and a gps is a good example. I still don't have one for my car (paper works fine) but I decided to buy a little hand held one for my many hikes. The model I got was is a Garmin Etex Vista. The unit costs about $200 on amazon and the mapping software an extra $75. Here is what it looks like.
I've had it for a few weeks but took it out for the first field test today up the Kuliouou Trail. The unit tracked my hike and here are the results:
In case you can't see the numbers, the hike was 4.4 miles RT and took me 2 hours (I stopped for 10min at the top). The top of the hill was 2071 feet (631m).
Took a few pics and a video at the top. As you can see.. it was pretty foggy.
March 07 Heathy Apple CrispApples were on sale this week at the market and I bought tons of them. Since I can't eat normal sweets, I decided to make a low fat apple crisp.
Start out with some sliced apples.
Then, mix up the toppings. Oats, brown sugar (tad), cinnamon, butter (tad). Mix it up well.
Result looks like this
Put the apples on a baking sheet
then put the topping on the apples. Spray with some pam and a bit of honey
Place in the oven at 375' for 35 min.
Comes out like this:
