April 29 Mid Week DinnerApril 27 Bud'sOne thing I really miss about America is Ben & Jerry's and Hagandaz Ice Cream. It is available here in Singapore... but it costs 4x what I use to pay in America. I refuse to pay that. I never had Bud's before I came here... it is not as good as the B&J/Hagz... but it is priced at a more reasonable 3 USD per pint. I had some Lava Brownie tonight
Back to the Quartz Ridge in Kuala LumpurWent to Kuala Lumpur because Vicky was swinging thru on a vacation. Took her to the Quartz Ridge that I hiked a few months ago:
This dog followed us up.
The lake behind us is where the city gets its drinking water.
KL off in the distance
Giving our little friend some water.
The way down is through a fruit orchard. First time I've ever seen durian on the tree before.
Stopped for some eats on the way back to the hotel... Rojak
The old Malay fovorite: Chendol! April 20 Sunday Night DinnerBig big big dinner tonight. Main dish was 皇帝雞. Here is how I made it...
The brown stuff on the chicken are all the spices.
Then wrap up in plastic and then foil (im sure there is a more authentic way to do this.. anyone got pointers?). This chicken was too big for my bamboo steamer so I had to use a big pan.
Tada.... 1.5 hours later. It was really good.
Here are the other dishes from tonight:
I can't figure out why my eggplant turned this dark purple almost brown color. Maybe they were a tad old? Before I cooked them they were much brighter. The dish still tasted good. Salt & peper shirmp, and a light Malay chicken cury. Can you believe I made all this? April 18 Memories of HomeApril 13 鍋貼SundayApril 12 BC WinsBoston College beat Notre Dame 4-1 this morning Asia time winning our first Chapionship since my junior year. The Red Sox also beat the Yankees (die die die) and the Celts won another mop up game before the playoffs start. Sorry to say the B's lost in double OT to the Canadians. Oh well.. can't win em all. Go BC!
April 11 Saturday LunchApril 10 Dinner at Tiong Baru MarketApril 06 Gunung Belumut (Mt. Belumut)This was my second attempt to climb Mt. Belumut and this time I had enough money to pay for the permit. This is the Mtn ahead in the clouds
Mt. Belumut is located in the middle of palm plantation. Here is some palm fruit on the side of the road.
Some pics on the way up
Saw tons of pitcher plants on this hike.
View from the top
This is what my shoes looked like at the bottom. Never hiked thru so much mud before
Mt. Belumut in the distance April 05 Saturday Night DinnerOff to try a long hike tomorrow in Malaysia so I decided to cook tonight (sat) instead of Sunday. I cooked something new this time... Emperor's Chicken (皇帝雞)which gave me a chance to try out my bamboo steam trays. Take a look: The chicken is wrapped up inside (sorry I should have taken a picture before I sealed it) and steamed for an hour or so. I believe the traditional way to make this is outside in an open fire using leaves... anyways, you can see how mine came to be. The final result is below:
Here is the rest of the nights cooking. I'm not sure why the dried peppers got so dark. They didn't burn... but lost their dark red color. Oh well. |
