July 31 China Trip Part III: Kangding, LitangAfter leaving Chengdu, I traveled by bus west to Kangding. This is what a chinese traffic jam looks like. This 1 hour delay was caused by road work. I also got stuck here on the way back. Kangding is the first semi-Tibetan town I went thru. While the whole area was cold... the clean air (just as clean as Tibet & Xin Jiang) made it worth the hardship.
Onlyl good thing is that food arrives fast.

The weather in Western Sichuan was a lot colder than I expected. 7-13'c. Because I freezing to death I bought this Chinese Army coat to keep warm. i'm not a big fan of the Chinese Army, but, the coat was great and at 70RMB..how could I go wrong?
Really neat how Tibetans write messages and post these prayer flags all over the mtns.

This is how China ran and still runs. These little round blocks of coal power evrything from restaurant stoves to heat homes. While not as common in Beijing and Shanghai as they use to be, you still see them. The coal lady below is delivering this the entire load to the restaurant you see pictured.

China Trip Part I: Chengdu, Huanglong, and JiuzhaigouI was on the road for over 1.5 months and finally got home yesterday. I posted most of these pictures in mass on Facebook. I will repost seveal here (esp for my Chinese friends as facebook is blocked in China). You'll notice a lot of food in these pictures. Afterall, eating is a big part of Chinese life. First part of the trip involved taking the train from Beijing to Chengdu. I don't travel on Chinese trains too often anymore but must say that 軟座 is pretty nice. We shared a cabin with these 2 ABC girls and their grandmother from Texas. They were going to visit relatives in Chengdu.

After arriving in Chengdu, the first thing we did was eat! Great leng 涼麵. The fish was good too (so I thought).

July 30 First Hawaii WODBack home after 1.5 months on the road. Just did a 5.5km run. Not too bad but a little spent from the long flight. Back to crossfit tomorrow! July 22 Rice Squats & PressesI haven't been able to work out with weights in some time as I'm traveling in rural China. So when I saw the locals carrying their brown rice around in these baskets it gave me an idea This is what over head and front squats look like using baskets of rice. I also did a bunch of presses. Im guessing each basket weighed about 25-30 lbs (maybe a tad more) so this wasn't too difficult. Its nice to know that if I stuck around rural Guizhou, I could do more than just pushups and air squats. July 20 凯里 (Kaili) WODJuly 16 Still in China...Changsha WOD![]() I've been on the road well over a month and haven't done let alone posted a workout in weeks. I was up at over 4000m for most of the time and since I'm not use to that altitude, figured it was a good idea not to workout much. Here in Changsha, the problem is of a different sorts: heat. It was over 41' today so I had to wait until 5pm to move. So here it is... my first wod in about 2 weeks: 400m run followed by 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 of ring dips (amazing the little park here has rings!) knees to elbows decline pushups followed by another 400m run Took me 20:36 to complete this in the wonderful 33' afternoon heat. |
